1. Product Basics and Definition
What is a TOM stopbar?
The Stopbar is the mechanism on TOM-style guitars which generally holds the ball-end of the string. Along with the bridge (between the stopbar and the bridge pickup) it's one of the main contributors in transferring the strings vibrational energy to the body of the guitar.
What does a Tune-O-Matic stopbar do?
It works in conjunction with the tuning post (at the headstock) to hold the guitar string taught. The tuning gear/post allows tension adjustment (tuning) and the stopbar simply holds the other end tight.
What is the difference between a stopbar and a tailpiece?
A stopbar is one type of tailpiece. It's most commonly found on Tune-O-Matic (TOM) guitars. Other styles include trapeze (found on hollowbody guitars), wrap tailpieces (1954-1955 Les Pauls), and Polara-style (Guild S-100s).
Stopbars are found on an estimated 40% of new electric guitars sold today.
How does a TOM stopbar affect guitar tone?
The mass and ductility of a stopbar can most certainly affect tone. The heavier and more ductile the stopbar, the more energy necessary to overcome inertia and move that stopbar. A stiff and lightweight material will transmit more vibrational energy to the guitar body than a heavy and flexible one.
What guitars use a Tune-O-Matic stopbar?
Gibson, Epiphone, Tokai, ESP, EVH, Gretsch, Ibanez, Heritage, PRS, Schecter, Jackson, Dean, Peavey, Yamaha, and Zemaitis all make guitars with TOM/Stopbar setups. The most common models are Les Pauls, SGs, Explorers, and ES-335s. With TOM bridges now standard across most guitar styles, nearly every design has a stopbar variant—even Strats and Telecasters.
How do I restring a TOM stopbar equipped guitar (like a Les Paul)?
Traditionally: Remove old strings, run new strings through the stopbar, over the bridge, down the neck, and into the tuning post. You'll need about 3 complete wraps around the tuning post. That's 60 turns of the peg (120 wrist motions) per string. Then wait hours or days for the wraps to settle and stop causing tuning drift.
With a Steadfast Stopbar: Run the string through the tuning post, down the neck, through the stopbar, pull tight, and tighten the set screw. Tune to pitch. Done. Way fewer twists, way less time, zero settling period.
What is a wraparound stopbar vs a TOM stopbar?
Wraparound is an older 1953-1955 Gibson Les Paul variation where the stopbar does double duty as both string holder AND bridge. The string wraps over the top of the stopbar/bridge unit. The Steadfast Stopbar is not a suitable replacement for this style (yet).
What materials are TOM stopbars made from?
Traditionally, Gibson made stopbars from sand-cast aluminum (lightweight and cheap). In 1970 they switched to die-cast zinc which is even cheaper but heavier and more ductile, leading to tone-suck. Aluminum's elasticity can make it act like a spring under tension, which may contribute to more "musical" qualities than zinc.
2. Compatibility and Fitment
How does the Steadfast double-locking system improve tuning?
Unlike traditional methods, the Steadfast Stopbar allows for reversed stringing. By placing the ball-end at the tuning post and locking the free end at the stopbar, you eliminate the slack and "creep" associated with multiple wraps around a tuning peg. This creates a double-locking mechanism that provides the tuning stability of a high-end tremolo system with the simplicity of a drop-in upgrade.
Is the Steadfast Stopbar a good upgrade for a Gibson Les Paul?
Absolutely! It was first conceived as a restringing/time-saving enhancement for a Gibson Les Paul that desperately needed a string change.
Is the Steadfast Stopbar a compatible upgrade for Epiphone guitars?
It sure is! Variations in specific year and model led us to adjust post spacing to ensure our stopbar correctly fits all US and Metric guitars currently using a traditional TOM/stopbar.

Does the Steadfast Stopbar fit USA and import studs?
It does. We've gone to great lengths to ensure proper fitment on the wide variety of available guitars using this hardware.
What is the difference between metric and imperial stopbar spacing?
About a millimeter, lol. Imperial post spacing is slightly wider and uses different thread standards. The Steadfast Stopbar works with both. It doesn't come with posts (your existing posts work just fine), and our spacing accommodates both US and metric configurations.
Will the Steadfast Stopbar fit a Nashville or ABR-1 bridge setup?
Yes, the Nashville/ABR-1 difference refers to the bridge type, not the stopbar. These bridges use the same imperial posts and spacing, so the Steadfast Stopbar fits and functions beautifully on both.
Does the Steadfast Stopbar fit PRS guitars?
It does not (yet). The stud spacing, stud size, and attachment method aren't compatible. That said, we're actively working on a version using our patented string impingement mechanism for Paul Reed Smith guitars. Stay tuned.
Will the Steadfast Stopbar fit aftermarket studs?
We haven't found studs it doesn't work on. If the studs worked for your original stopbar, they'll work with ours. If you've got oversized (or undersized) aftermarket studs that require a specific bar, reinstall your original studs and our bar will fit.
Can I use the Steadfast Stopbar on a left-handed guitar?
Stopbars aren't handed-specific. As long as your guitar uses standard imperial or metric spacing, the Steadfast Stopbar will fit.
Does the Steadfast Stopbar have options for 7/8/9 string guitars?
Currently, we do not. We haven't had a request for one. With the exception of a relatively rare 7-string Les Paul, most extended range instruments don't use stopbars. If this is a blind spot for us, please shoot us a message and let us know!
3. Installation and Setup
How do you install a Steadfast Stopbar?
Installation is a breeze. Remove your old strings and the original stopbar comes right off. Some newer guitars use mechanisms to hold the stopbar to the studs...do what it takes to take the old bar off, put it in the case, and slide the Steadfast Stopbar into place. Before restringing, turn the tuning pegs so the tuning post hole points directly at the corresponding nut groove. Now restring backwards: start at the headstock, run the string through the tuning post (the ball end keeps it in place), down the neck, through the stopbar, maintain some tension, and tighten the set screw with the included hex driver. Place the string in the nut groove, align it on the saddle, then tune up to pitch.
Do I need special tools to install a Steadfast Stopbar?
Nothing we don't include. The only necessary tool is the included 2.5mm hex driver.
Do I need special strings to use the Steadfast Stopbar?
No special strings required; the Steadfast Stopbar works with all standard electric guitar string brands.
How tight should a Steadfast Stopbar be screwed down?
In our opinion, it should NOT be screwed down tight against the body. Doing so creates too steep a break angle and the string will impact the rear of the bridge, increasing downward pressure on the bridge, and potentially causing bridge sag. Adjust your stopbar studs so strings have a clear path from the rear of the saddle to the stopbar. Ideally you'll want about a millimeter of clearance between the bottom of the string and the rear edge of the bridge.
But I should screw the set screws down tight, right?
Yes, the set screws should be tightened using your whole hand on the hex driver. If strings slip loose when you tune up, realign the tuning post with the nut slot, tug on the string, and reset the set screw tighter.
Should a Steadfast Stopbar touch the body?
When strung normally, no. Some people like top-wrapping their stopbars; however, be forewarned... Top-wrapping puts the string path directly over the set screw and could interfere with installation. We're currently working on an offset screw design to accommodate players who appreciate the slinky feel of a top-wrapped setup...(the author is certainly one!)
How do I adjust Steadfast Stopbar height for best tone?
...uhhh...That's a loaded question...please use a large flat-head screwdriver with something between the screwdriver and the stud so you don't scratch or dent the stud. (I use a shop rag) ...how's that for a non-answer?
Does the Steadfast Stopbar require professional installation?
Absolutely not. If you're new to playing or not experienced in doing your own setups, please have an experienced friend help. The Steadfast Stopbar is a drop-in replacement.
4. Tone, Sustain, and Performance
Does a Steadfast Stopbar increase sustain?
Yes. Manufacturers cut costs by using cheap die-cast zinc/zamac to make stopbars. Aluminum was the original material used on golden-era Les Pauls, and they got it right the first time. Modern alloys and tight-tolerance CNC manufacturing techniques increase sustain through improved energy transfer to the guitar body.
How does a Steadfast Stopbar affect guitar resonance?
The lighter and stiffer a stopbar is, the more vibrational energy it transfers to the guitar. I personally believe the movement (vibration) of the guitar body creates movement (vibration) of the pickups relative to the strings, and this is heard as increased resonance when amplified. Unplugged, your guitar will be louder and more mid-focused. Through a clean amp, you'll notice more focused and clearer tonality. With gain, you'll notice more harmonics and sustain.
Will the Steadfast Stopbar improve tuning stability?
YES! This is likely our most important feature. Sure, you can restring in less time, but the REAL time savings is in the reduction of retunings necessary in the first hours after restringing. As the string wrapped around the tuning post relaxes and moves, the guitar loses pitch substantially over the first several hours of play. The Steadfast Stopbar eliminates those wraps and delivers ultimate tuning stability from the first chord.
Does a heavier stopbar improve tone?
Generally, no. Heavier stopbars absorb vibrational energy rather than transferring it to the guitar body. Some players prefer brass and steel stopbars for specific tonal characteristics, and there's merit to personal preference. But compared to standard zinc/pot-metal stopbars, the Steadfast Stopbar delivers better resonance, sustain, and tonal clarity.
Can a Steadfast Stopbar reduce string breakage?
If your strings are breaking at the bar, you've likely got a manufacturing defect causing the breakage. In that case, a Steadfast Stopbar will certainly help or eliminate that issue. If strings are breaking elsewhere, it's likely an improperly cut nut, a burr on the bridge or fret, or improper picking technique.
Update: A user reported that before installing the Steadfast Stopbar, they used to get string breaks at the tuning post. Now, with the reverse stringing method we utilize, they don't break strings there anymore. The difference is due to the string wraps that hold the ball-end serve to reinforce that area of the string. So, if you're getting breaks at the tuning post, our product may very well alleviate that issue!
Will the Steadfast Stopbar reduce rattles or buzzing?
Unfortunately, probably not. That's likely a bridge issue (Nashville bridges are notorious for retainer clip rattles), or something else like pickup springs, truss rod, or general hardware looseness. Stopbars don't have a reputation for rattle. Ours does not rattle.
How does a Steadfast Stopbar impact attack and note clarity?
The Steadfast Stopbar's lightweight aluminum construction transfers more vibrational energy to the guitar body than heavier zinc stopbars. This results in sharper attack and clearer note definition. Heavier, more ductile bridges and stopbars prevent the body from receiving as much vibrational energy and can sap that energy directly from the strings.
5. Stringing and Break Angle
How do you string a Steadfast Stopbar correctly?
Backwards. The correct answer is backwards. Start at the tuning post and run the string to the stopbar. Ball-end at the tuner. Pull it tight and screw down the set screw. Tune to pitch, set the bend at the tuning post with a quick squeeze, give the strings a good tug, retune, and you're good to go!
What is top-wrapping a stopbar?
Top-wrapping refers to running strings over the top and back side of the stopbar instead of in/out the front. This allows the stopbar to be lowered all the way to the body, while giving strings a much shallower break angle. This technique is associated with a softer string feel.
Can the Steadfast Stopbar be top-wrapped?
It can. Just know that top-wrapped installation places the string path directly over the set screw and may impede your ability to pull the string tight. Simply run the string thru the tuner first (The Steadfast Way), then over the bar and into the BACKSIDE of the Steadfast Stopbar. Take the end (out the front) and pull as much slack as possible thru the stopbar. You'll have to help the string thru. You want NO slack left in the string when you do this. If you don't get the string tight enough, this creates the potential for more than a single turn of the tuning post to be necessary when tuning up to pitch, causing the string to impact the ball end. Not a huge problem...but not ideal, and not as fast. Try it and see if it works for you. I do it on some of my guitars, and it works, but I have a hard time recommending it to everyone. We're actively working on a TopWrap version that specifically addresses these players. We're going to improve the speed and the ease of restringing TopWrapped guitars, as well as make our design work on Wrap-tail bridges!
Is top-wrapping better for tone or feel?
I don't notice a tonal improvement, it's all about feel...however sometimes we feel with our ears (stiff amps anyone?) and hear with our fingers...I say "feel"...someone will disagree with me.
Does the Steadfast Stopbar work with heavy gauge strings?
Yes. Unless you're using a string gauge larger than .079 for your lowest string...you'll be fine. A typical low-E is .046. .079 is heavier than a D string on a bass.
6. Comparisons and Alternatives
What is the difference between the Steadfast Stopbar and a standard stopbar?
The difference is mainly our patented innovation. We allow the string to run through the tuning post (locking it at the ball-end), then tightly secured at the stopbar using set screws. This creates a double-locking design. In addition, we use high-grade 6061 aircraft aluminum billet machined on tight-tolerance, 5-axis CNCs.
Is the Steadfast Stopbar better than a zinc stopbar?
Much better. Zinc is heavier and more ductile. Additionally, the die-casting process can create voids and holes inside the bar, leading to differences in sound between strings.
How much lighter is the Steadfast Stopbar than a zinc stopbar?
A standard Gibson zamak unit is ~88gm. The Steadfast Stopbar weighs less than half that at 37gm.
How does this compare to aluminum stopbars?
Die-cast aluminum can suffer the same void issues as zinc and zamak, leading to inconsistent sound from string to string. Manufacturers CNC-machining stopbars from aluminum billet are making the best possible products, but they still cannot implement our patented innovation to reduce restringing time or improve tuning stability.
Is this better than a locking stopbar?
A locking stopbar typically refers to a system where the stopbar is locked onto the posts. Our product doesn't do this (yet). Instead, we're a string-locking stopbar. We lock the strings to the stopbar. This is an industry first.
Why choose the Steadfast Stopbar over cheaper alternatives?
Because we've patented the design, no other manufacturer can offer the reduction in time to change strings or the tuning stability of our unique product.
Why is the Steadfast Stopbar better than locking tuners?
For a couple of reasons. One, most locking tuners require reaming the original headstock hole larger and drilling new screw holes—modifications that can decrease resale value. Two, locking tuners add significant weight to the headstock. For guitars prone to neck dive (SG's and Firebird's in particular), adding locking tuners exacerbates the problem. The Steadfast Stopbar keeps the headstock unmodified and lightweight while still giving you quick string changes and tuning stability.
7. Materials, Manufacturing, and Quality
What material is the Steadfast Stopbar made from?
Aircraft-grade 6061 billet aluminum. We're currently testing other space-age aluminum alloys as well as Titanium, Stainless Steel, Brass, Bronze, Tungsten, and Zirconium. We'll let you know what we find out.
What's all this talk about billet aluminum?
Aluminum billet is a solid piece of aluminum that has been continuously cast or hot-extruded, allowed to cool, then cut to length. This gives it a uniform internal grain structure and consistent material properties throughout, making it ideal for precision machining. Billet aluminum isn't poured into a final-shape mold. Instead, the finished part is machined from solid billet, resulting in tighter tolerances, higher strength, and better dimensional consistency compared to cast aluminum.
Is the Steadfast Stopbar CNC machined?
Yes, it's manufactured on 5-axis CNCs.
Where is the Steadfast Stopbar manufactured?
We are proud to manufacture in the USA. Our stopbar is made in the USA, our hex driver is made in the USA, our screws currently come from Taiwan, and our boxes come from China. We've made significant investment to ensure as much of our production is focused on domestic manufacture. This is important to us.
Is the Steadfast Stopbar plated or solid metal?
Depends on the finish. Our Faded and PRO models feature an anodized finish over the solid billet aluminum. Standard and Studio models use nickel plate over the solid billet aluminum. Our Custom model uses genuine 24k Gold plated over solid billet aluminum. And finally, the Custom-Shop models use a Cerakote ceramic coating over solid billet aluminum (currently). We're actively investigating new materials selection. Shoot us a message if you've got a favorite you'd like to see incorporated.
Does the finish affect tone?
The way we do it, no.
Will the finish wear over time?
It should not. That said, it will wear and show signs of use in the same manner as the guitar to which it is attached.
Is this stopbar corrosion resistant?
Yes. We use aluminum anodizing, nickel plating, gold plating, and Cerakote for our finishes, and they are all corrosion resistant.
8. Durability, Reliability, and Maintenance
How durable is the Steadfast Stopbar?
Very. It will last the lifetime of the guitar.
Will the Steadfast Stopbar bend or deform over time?
It will not.
Does the Steadfast Stopbar require maintenance?
It does not.
Can the Steadfast Stopbar strip studs or threads?
No. We've done destructive testing trying to force the threads to strip. "It's aluminum, surely the threads will be the weak point." I clamped the Steadfast Stopbar in a vise and used an L-bar hex wrench with a breaker bar...we bent the L-bar. We couldn't get the threads to strip. But we did notice small bumps form on the bottom of the bar. If you notice bumps on the bottom of your bar, you're tightening too much. This is why we include a custom-designed handled hex driver instead of a (much cheaper) L-bar hex wrench. It's harder (impossible?) to over-torque the set screws with a straight handled hex driver. Just get the screw snug and if the string slips, back up and do it again...with force. You're not gonna break anything.
How long will the Steadfast Stopbar last?
It will last the lifetime of your guitar.
9. Use Cases and Player Types
Is the Steadfast Stopbar good for blues players?
Absolutely. Blues players benefit from improved tuning stability during bends and the tonal clarity of lightweight aluminum, which enhances sustain and harmonic overtones. Plus, faster restringing means more time playing and less time wrestling with strings.
Is the Steadfast Stopbar good for rock and metal?
Great! Rock and metal players push tuning stability to the limit with aggressive playing, down-tuning, and frequent string changes. The Steadfast Stopbar delivers instant tuning stability and cuts restringing time by 75%...play hard and get back to playing sooner.
Is the Steadfast Stopbar suitable for vintage guitars?
Nope. Haha. Just kidding. It sure is. The original vintage units are sand or die-cast, therefore subject to manufacturing voids. They're also crazy valuable and don't work as well. The Steadfast Stopbar is a drop-in replacement part...no modification necessary. Put the original in the case and save yourself some time restringing and retuning!
Is the Steadfast Stopbar good for studio recording?
This is another huge use case! Studio owners and session musicians change strings constantly. Time is money. Restring faster, get to stable tuning faster, and sound better while you're at it!
Is the Steadfast Stopbar suitable for touring musicians?
It is VERY suitable for touring musicians (and their guitar techs)! They are the ones who could get the most from this. Touring musicians change strings much more than bedroom players. New strings daily (sometimes twice daily). This innovation and value should be obvious to anyone doing this for a living.
Is the Steadfast Stopbar good for beginners?
We absolutely believe it is. Restringing is one of the most difficult things a new guitarist has to endure (besides sore, bleeding fingers), and most of them are put off changing strings because it's so difficult. This leads to playing on dead, crummy sounding strings, which isn't any fun. This leads to not playing as much, which then leads to not playing...period. When changing strings is easy, playing is more fun. When you don't have to tune as much, playing is more fun. When playing is fun, you do it more. We want more guitar players, playing more.
10. Buying, Warranty, and Support
Does the Steadfast Stopbar come with studs?
Nope, the ones already on your guitar are fine.
What is included with the Steadfast Stopbar?
The Steadfast Stopbar comes complete with the stopbar, set screws to hold the strings, a hex driver to tighten the set screws, and foam padding to hold it all in the box...once you've received your Steadfast Stopbar, turn the padding over and the box turns into a cool pick holder.
Is there a warranty on the Steadfast Stopbar?
We have a Limited Lifetime Guarantee. We warranty the materials and manufacture to the original purchaser.

11. Problem-Solving and Troubleshooting
Why is my stopbar causing string buzz?
It's probably not. If it is, contact us and let's get it sorted.
Why won't my stopbar sit flush?
If you're using it as prescribed, it shouldn't be flush. It should sit about a 1/4 inch above the top of the guitar (neck set angle will determine the exact height). This ensures the strings aren't creating undue pressure on the bridge which can lead to bridge collapse.
Why does my stopbar lean forward?
This can be a concern on top-wrapped stopbars. If your bar is leaning forward, take some pictures and reach out to us.
Can a stopbar cause tuning instability?
No, quite the opposite. If you're having tuning instability issues, ensure the offending string set screw is tight and that the bend angle of the string at the tuning post is severe. If it's not bent cleanly, you can get tuning instability. Squeeze the string towards the post to help "set the bend".
What causes stopbar rattling?
Once a stopbar is installed correctly and the strings are all up to pitch, there should be no rattling. Ensure the strings and bar are installed correctly and all screws are tight.
Can a stopbar affect intonation?
No, the stopbar is outside of the vibrating length of the string. However, when you changed the stopbar, make sure you didn't inadvertently flip the orientation of the bridge. THIS will affect intonation.
12. Bonus Questions
What is the best TOM stopbar for sustain?
Likely brass. It's heavy. It will prevent the string's vibrational energy from ever making it to the wood of the guitar. You will maximize sustain at the expense of resonance and tone.
What is the best stopbar for a Les Paul?
The Steadfast Stopbar, of course. The weight savings of billet aluminum alloy. The stable tuning right from the first chord. Strings are locked into the tuning gear and the stopbar. The fastest restringing you've ever experienced on a TOM/Stopbar guitar. And you'll notice an improvement in tone and sustain over your factory zinc bar.
Do professional guitarists upgrade their stopbars?
All the time. There are dozens of companies who make and sell high-quality replacement stopbars. Unfortunately for them, we're the only ones with a patent on this innovation which allows tuning to be steady and restringing to be faster.
Is upgrading a stopbar worth it?
Yes. The tonal benefits combined with the speed of restringing and the ultimate tuning stability make the Steadfast Stopbar a no-brainer.
What is the best stopbar material for tone?
IMVHO, aircraft and space-age aluminum alloys are the best of the best. Votes will be cast for brass, steel, and titanium too... "Horses for courses" but when combining all aspects of tonality, aluminum is BEST!
